BaryeBARYE, Antoine Louis 1796-1875Born in Paris on September 24, 1796. At the age of thirteen he was apprenticed to Fourrier. Later he switched to the jewellery trade and learned the technique of moulding reliefs. He turned to sculpture in 1817 and worked in the studios of A.J. Bosio and A.J. Gros and was strongly influenced by the painting of Géricault. He won second prize in 1820 with his figure of Cain cursed by God. He continued to pratice modelling, studying ancient sculpture at the Louvre, and the animals at the Jardin des Plantes. He exhibited at the Salon from 1827 onwards, making his début with portrait busts. In 1831 he won a second prize at the Salon with his bronze of a ??tiger devouring a gavial? and his marked the turning point in this career. Under the Secon Empire his reputation grew steadily and he was elected to the Academy in 1867. In a career spanning half a century he had a prodigious output of bronzes covering every aspect of animal life.
